The in-between
The in-between
When speaking and writing you target your audience. This is also the case in online communications. Many online communications are available to anybody and therefore I target an in-between audience. The level of communication is above 8th grade (the average US-reading level), but I try to avoid jargon or at least explain the gibberish words.
For example: I (try to) maintain a blog containing notes about my research, and work-related life. In addition, this website does not have the traditional scientist style and on Twitter you will find a similar voice.

What language do I speak?
What language do I speak?
Science speak is almost like a different language. Similar to most languages, every science discipline has its own dialect. People speaking different dialects don't necessarily understand each other. An ecologist can have trouble understanding an epidemiologist, and a veterinarian can confuse engineers in a heart beat. I do my best to bridge these gaps. *
* My mother tongue is Dutch, I speak English fluently and once was taught German, French and Latin. I picked up Norwegian when I lived there and I am currently a student of the Spanish language.
